Saturday Reading!-Introducing Ms.Ruchira Kamboj
Right from my childhood I have been told that Inda in North- South Direction is from Kanya Kumari to Kashmir. But Ancien
t India Was From Kanyatiratha(Earlier name of Kanyakumari) Kamboja (Sanskrit: कम्बोज) was a kingdom of Iron Age India, frequently mentioned in Sanskrit and Pali literature. The early Kamboja janapada coalesced to become one of the shodhasha (sixteen) Mahajanapadas (great kingdoms) of ancient India. Kamboja is regularly mentioned as "the country of horses" (Asvanam ayatanam), and According to
Historian Etienne,
perhaps this well-established reputation that won for the horse
breeders of Bajaur and Swat the designation Aspasioi and assakenoi
(from the Sanskrit asva "horse").
In Mahabharat being related to Duryodhan's wife The Kamboj king Sudakshina fought from Kaurwan's side and was defeated by Karna. The Kambojs entered into conflict with Alexander the Great as he invaded Central Asia. The Macedonian conqueror made short shrift of the arrangements of Darius and after over-running the Achaemenid Empire he dashed into today's eastern Afghanistan and western Pakistan. There he encountered resistance from the Kambojs' tribe were also good cattle breeders and agriculturists, some of which were of a size and shape superior to what the Macedonians had known, and which Alexander decided to send to Macedonia for agriculture.
I find Kamboj's are great fighters in every field but not in the name of religion or caste
e.g.Shaheed udham Singh who shot O'Dwyer in Londonn to avenge
Jallianwala bagh massacre after 21 years persuit was a Sikh of Kamboj
clan's 'Jammu' Sub caste ,during trial when asked about his caste and
religion by the judge, gave his name as Ram, Mohammad Singh
Azad.Dr.Bhagat Singh Thind, an Indian American writer and lecturer on
spirituality was involved in legal battle for over the rights of
non-white people to obtain United States' citizenship for 23 years in US
courts including Supreme court, was a turbaned Sikhs of 'Thind'
sub-caste of Kamboj clan. Vidyadharan Suraj Parshad Naipaul(Sub cast among Kambojs) never used his caste. Kambojs are a secular society and are Hindus,Sikhs,Muslims and Buddhists.
In
section 10.43 - 10.44 Manu gives a list of Kshatriya tribes including
Kamboj's who, through neglect of the priests and their rites, had fallen
to the status of Shudras
as Kamboj King refused to give 100 horses as 'Dakshna'(Free gift) to
Brahmin priests to which they were entitled according to 'Manu Simriti'. In
early Sixties, Balwant Singh the then Finance minister of Punjab, got
Kamboj community's poor included in Economically backward classes from
Partap Singh Karion, the then chief Minister for a period of 5 years.
Since I was well to do, I remained in General category and my Sub-caste
'Padha', I started writing my caste Kamboj as my last name, a VOP (Very
Ordinary Person) I scored a First in doing so and Ruchira, the VIP
(Very Important Person) is the 2nd!
