The word malang itself most likely derives from the Persian language but is used in many languages with varying meanings. The word can be found in Persian, Pashto, Dari, Urdu, Punjabi, Hindi, and Malay (Indonesia) with similar meanings.
The word can mean someone:
i- Who is not aware of himself, not aware of his surroundings, not worried about worldly things.
ii- Shaman, magician, sorcerer, beggar, addict, insane person, vagrant wanderer, destitute.
iii- A saint, a devotee, a person not enamoured of worldly possessions or an attendant at a shrine or a religious mystic.
J L Lee in his research paper ‘The Ancient Supremacy’- Bukhara, Afghanistan and the Battle for Balkh 1731-1901 defined malang as: a religious mystic, often with heterodox or extreme Sufi tendencies; a shrine attendant.
So a Sufi or religious mystic who does not agree with the orthodox beliefs and opinions of Muslims is a malang.

Urdu Meaning and Translation of Malang is -
بے خؤ - be khud (Bekhood-a person who is in a trance, or has lost of self-awareness.)
Hum faqiro.n ki soorto.n pe na jaa,hum kayee suratei.n dhaar
letei.n hai.n,
jindagi ke udaas lamho.n ko, muskra kar guzaar leitei.n hai.n
This expression conveys careless nature of a person.which means he is not affected by ups and downs of life,remains
happy remains mast malang.
Malang is a word used for some Sufi saints,
quite commonly, as well as a derogatory term sometimes, as a mad or a
nomad, though in poetry it is mostly not seen as a derogatory term.
Another definition of ‘malang’ is in
Malaysian, where it means ‘unfortunate’, referring to someone or
something that is unlucky or suffers misfortune.
Malangs from Baluchistan
Malang and Mazoob are different terms for the same phenomenon.
Now in Pakistan a malang is also a person who smokes weed all day,
wears sort of tatted clothes, lots of beaded necklaces and so on.. a
little like a fakeer..There is a special train that travels to Daatha
Darbaar in Pakistan full of malangs puffing away,
like thats what they do.. and again they get into a hajoom and start
chanting Maula Ali.

“Majzoob: is Arabic in origin, and means “the
absorbed one” i.e. one whose mind is so completely absorbed in the
presence of God that it loses all other bearings, and the person appears
to have lost their mind to the ordinary observer.
“Malang: on the other hand originates from the
various dialects that exist in the Punjab region of South and is used to
describe the same kind of state which others would describe as Majzoob.
