Moon God Although the moon has not had great prominence in the history of religion, the worship of it has been known since earliest recorded time—in the oldest literatures of Egypt, Babylonia, India, and China—and still exists today in various parts of the world, particularly among certain African and Native American groups. Moon worship is founded on the belief that the phases of the moon and the growth and decline of plant, animal, and human life are related. In some societies food was laid out at night to absorb the rays of the moon, which were thought to have power to cure disease and prolong life. Among the Baganda of central Africa it was customary for a mother to bathe her newborn child by the light of the first full moon. The moon was frequently equated with wisdom and justice, as in the worship of the Egyptian god Thoth and the Mesopotamian god Sin. In general, however, the moon has been the basis for many amorous legends and some superstition

A uditors claim that they are watchdogs, and not bloodhounds. But other departments usually take this claim with a pinch of salt, as they consider them having a nose better than that of a sniffer dog which could find a ‘fish’ in any financial deal. Once an Audit party  from Accountant General's office came for annual audit of my office. In those days rooms were heated during winter months  by burning wood in the fire place. The Party took an objection about the disposal of charcoal obtained after burning of wood and made an audit para about loss to Govt. exchequer by not accounting for charcoal which definitely  had a resale value. On the last day the senior accounts officer discussed the audit paras with me so that the one's satisfactorily explained objections could be dropped. My old accountant sitting besides me offered to explain. The explanation ran like this," Sir the charcoal was again burned in 'Angithis,', the ash obtained was spread i

Stories this Wednesday!

Nathu Khan’s Umeed Brig Gurinder Singh (Retd) Brig Gurinder Singh (Retd) IN 1988 my battalion moved to Siachen Glacier. We all were anxious and overawed by exaggerated stories/rumours about life in the highest war zone of the world. It was already September, there was not enough time before the long and severe winter would set in and some of the posts would remain cut off for six months. When it came to occupy a small, precariously located post to be manned by eight men led by a Havildar, the Company Commander made an emotive invocation for volunteers to step out. Even before he finished, Havildar Nathu Khan offered to be the post commander. The next day at 3.30 am, Nathu Khan led his men to the post and got down to taking over the operational responsibility. The post, 30 ft by 20 ft and dominated by enemy fire and observation, lay in the avalanche-prone zone. A wonderful view down the slopes was the only consolation. Over the next few da
