Story this Wednesday!

'HUGE BLESSINGS IN SMALL VIRTUES'. Like a large percentage of secular Indians, I have an incident to share which may awaken the conscience of some of my fellow men. The incident goes back to nearly a year, and even now evokes poignancy in my heart. Last November, I was driving back to Dehradun from Chandigarh — a fascinating four-hour journey, with the added attraction of visiting Paonta Sahib Gurdwara. I had to break on the way to give myself and my car some rest. And what better than entering the abode of the Guru. Besides the soothing kirtan, it is the langar that one savours, seated on the floor among a multitude of people from all walks of life. Some partake of all meals as they have no means to satiate their hunger. Breaking bread with them gives an indescribable spiritual high, and to experience this, one doesn’t have to belong to any one religion. I, too, enjoyed the langar and came out to get on with my journey. I stopped to buy some knick-knacks ...

Quotes of the day!

Image
A poor man asked the Buddha, “Why am I so poor?” The Buddha said, “you do not learn to give.” So the poor man said, “If I’m not having anything?” Buddha said: “You have a few things, The Face, which can give a smile; Mouth: you can praise or comfort others; The Heart: it can open up to others; Eyes: who can look the other with the eyes of goodness; Body: which can be used to help others.” N.B. Both the above Quotes attributed to Lord Budha are Fake. It appears that someone was making a little Buddhist-themed joke rather than trying to claim that this is actually a canonical quote. But the Message is loud and Clear! -Tejinder Kamboj

Sunday Special--God's Cow!

Image
When I was a child,I was fascinated by  a few insects, like Butterflies,Jugnu (Glow worm-or firefly), Lady bug,and Beer bahuti(Brother's Bride-In Punjabi). The former two were out of reach of kids, Ladybirds and Beer Bahuti have long been of interest to children, as such I could play with the later Two. Now I learnt that both my favorites are somehow related to the cow! Surprised? I share my research  with you, as follows :- ladybugs/ lady birds called "God's cows" in some languages (such as Russian, French, Hebrew, etc.) The creature beloved in many countries. In Russian, we call it “God’s cow”. Yep, something like this. Ladybugs smell with their feet and antennae. The farmers began to call the Ladybugs “the Beetles of Our Lady” and eventually they were known as Lady Beetles. The Ladybug's red wings are said to represent the Virgin's cloak and the black spots her joys and sorrows. The Ladybug is widely...

Sunday Special-Rainbow Carrots!

Image
Rainbow carrots  Amazing Health Benefits of Rainbow Carrots The colour of carrot root is the result of various pigments that serve as intermediate products in the carotenoids pathway (Koch and Goldman 2005) . Six carotenes have been reported in carrots, as α-, β-, γ- and ξ-carotenes, lycopene and β-zeacarotene (Simon and Wolff 1987). The major pigments responsible for orange and yellow colour of the roots are α- and β-carotene. β-carotene often represent 50% or more of the total carotenoids content. The red colour of the carrot root is caused by lycopene and the yellow colour is affected by xanthophylls (Rubatzky et al. 1999) . White roots are low in total carotenoids (Buishand and Gableman 1979) . Purple carrots contain very high contents of phenolics, mainly anthocyanins, and are characterized by a higher antioxidant capacity than orange, yellow or white varieties (Alasalvar et al. 2005) . Differences in chemical composition, mainly among the phenolic...

King Solomon’s Ring - A Short Story about Life One day, King Solomon, the wisest man in the world, wanted to test the integrity and wisdom of his faithful servant. The King summoned his servant and asked him to carry out a task, knowing that it could not be completed. King Solomon said: "The Feast of Tabernacles is in 6 months, and I would like to wear a magic ring for the holiday. Any person who is sad and looks at the ring will become happy and any happy person who looks at the ring will become sad.” The faithful servant immediately went on the journey in the search of the mysterious ring. A month passed, two months passed, and the servant, who visited every jeweler and peddler in the kingdom, remained without the ring. Two more months passed, and the servant reached the limits of the kingdom, but he had yet to find any one who had heard of such a magical ring. Over time, the faithful servant became frustrated. With all his might he wan...
